SCHOOL LIST BUILDER

Build Your College List

Enter your stats. We'll sort 100 schools into Reach, Match, and Safety — based on real admission data, not guesswork.

How the College List Builder Works

Building a balanced college list is the most important decision in your application process. Our tool uses federal admission data from the U.S. Department of Education to classify schools into three tiers based on your academic profile:

Reach — Schools where your stats fall below the admitted student median. Acceptance is a stretch, but worth applying if it's your dream school. Match — Schools where your GPA and test scores align with the typical admitted student. You have competitive odds. Safety — Schools where you exceed the typical admitted profile. Strong chance of acceptance.

The classification considers four factors: acceptance rate, your SAT/ACT score vs the school's 25th-75th percentile range, your GPA relative to the school's selectivity tier, and the school's overall admission competitiveness. All data comes from IPEDS, College Scorecard, and Common Data Set reports.

Frequently Asked Questions About College List Builder

How many colleges should I apply to? +

Most counselors recommend 8-12 schools: 2-3 Reach, 3-4 Match, and 2-3 Safety. Our tool helps you identify which tier each school falls into based on your specific GPA and test scores.

What is a Reach, Match, and Safety school? +

A Reach school is one where your stats are below the average admitted student — acceptance is possible but not likely. A Match school is where your profile aligns with typical admits. A Safety school is where your stats exceed the admitted profile, giving you strong odds of acceptance.

Is the college list builder free? +

Yes, completely free. No account required. Our tool uses public federal data from the U.S. Department of Education to classify 100 top colleges based on your GPA, SAT/ACT scores, and preferences.

How accurate is the Reach/Match/Safety classification? +

Our classification is based on federal admission data including acceptance rates, SAT/ACT score ranges, and GPA benchmarks. While no tool can guarantee admission (holistic review includes essays, activities, and recommendations), our data-driven approach gives you a realistic starting point.

What data does the college list builder use? +

We use three authoritative federal sources: IPEDS (Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System), the College Scorecard from the U.S. Department of Education, and Common Data Set reports published by individual colleges.

Can I filter schools by state or major? +

Yes. You can filter by preferred state, intended major, and family income bracket. The income filter adjusts the displayed net cost to show what families in your bracket actually pay after financial aid.
